French

Recognising our place in the wider world is a fundamental principle within our school community.  At Marton-cum-Grafton Primary School, the intention of our MFL curriculum is to develop an interest in and thirst for learning other languages. We aim to We pride ourselves on providing the opportunity for all children to learn a language during their time at our school.

We intend to:

  • introduce the learning of the French language and the understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways.
  • embed the essential skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.
  • stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language and creativity in experimenting with it
  • support oracy and literacy, and in particular develop speaking and listening skills
  • help children develop their awareness of cultural similarities and differences
  • lay the foundations for future language study by pupils
  • build the children’s ‘culture capital’ so that they are aware of similarities and differences between cultures.

Teaching of French at Marton cum Grafton is based on the aims and purposes outlined in the National Curriculum and has fidelity to the academic discipline of foreign language learning.

Academic Fingerprint for Foreign Languages:

Speak and write to convey ideas, facts and feelings and communicate for practical purposes.

Understand and respond to spoken and written language using authentic sources.

Develop language acquisition strategies to provide the foundation for further language learning.

Understand and apply a variety of grammatical structures.

Deepen understanding and foster curiosity of the world through developing inter-cultural understanding.

At Marton cum Grafton we have carefully designed a knowledge rich curriculum, underpinned by a progression of skills. The content is carefully ordered to ensure that previous years’ content is revisited and then applied in new ways with increasing complexity. The knowledge and skills build incrementally so that by the end of Key Stage 2 children know, understand and apply the subject content specified in the Programme of Study for foreign languages.

In KS1, children take part in regular fun activities, games and songs to help them to develop awareness of basic French words and phrases.

Our MFL curriculum will ensure all pupils develop key language learning skills set out by the national curriculum, as well as a love of languages and learning about other cultures.

These are as follows:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
